SonarMD is reimagining care for chronic diseases—starting with gastroenterology—by aligning incentives around the doctor-patient relationship. The company combines AI technology with human support to detect clinical deterioration early and help specialists intervene before emergencies occur, reducing healthcare costs and improving patient outcomes.
As Director of Engineering (Product), you will lead and grow a small, AI-first product engineering team. This is fundamentally a people and business role: building the team, raising capability, and ensuring every line of code shipped ties to real business outcomes.
You will partner closely with a Technical Lead (who owns architecture, design, and build-vs-buy decisions) and a Product Leader (who owns product strategy, discovery, and roadmap). You bring business context, organizational air cover, and a strong point of view while letting each leader drive their craft.
Key responsibilities include:
- Building and growing the engineering team through thoughtful hiring, onboarding, and development; coaching engineers and creating stretch opportunities.
- Partnering with the Technical Lead to set direction, bringing business context and prioritization while they own technical depth and execution.
- Partnering with the Product Leader to inject engineering reality—capacity, feasibility, risk, compliance—into product decisions.
- Catalyzing engineering solutions to business problems by convening stakeholders, framing problems clearly, and helping technical effort compound into real outcomes.
- Shaping an AI-first operating model: championing AI-augmented workflows, setting expectations for AI tooling adoption, and integrating LLMs, RAG, and agentic patterns responsibly.
- Stabilizing deployment environments: owning reliability and operability of CI/CD, infrastructure, and incident response; unblocking the team when organizational support is needed.
- Owning compliance and audit readiness: partnering with Security, Compliance, and Operations to maintain SOC 2, HIPAA controls, and healthcare regulatory requirements; driving audit readiness and evidence collection.
- Setting a quality and ownership bar: reinforcing a "No-QA" culture where engineers test their own work, monitor releases, and treat deployment as the start of responsibility.
- Leading with clarity: communicating engineering progress, risk, and trade-offs to executives, clinical leaders, and cross-functional partners.
You bring 10+ years of software engineering experience with at least 3 years in an engineering leadership role (Director, Engineering Manager, Head of Engineering, or similar) managing small, high-output product teams. You are a team builder first, taking pride in hiring well and growing engineers. You are a strong business collaborator and natural catalyst, fluent in healthcare economics (cost of care, utilization, contract performance, ROI). You partner well with strong technical and product leaders, knowing how to give each room to own their domain while being a real partner in conversations. You have deep experience in healthcare, with working command of HIPAA, PHI handling, and regulated software development. You understand the operational weight of working with health plans, providers, and clinical data. You have led or materially contributed to SOC 2 (Type I and Type II), HITRUST, or comparable audit programs, owning controls, evidence, and remediation.
