Salary: USD 250,000 - 290,000 / annual
Turnkey is building programmable guardrails infrastructure for the autonomous economy, enabling organizations to operate safely on autopilot. Founded by the team that scaled Coinbase Custody to $100M+ ARR, the company is focused on creating trustless, programmable foundations for web3 and decentralized systems.
You will serve as Director of Engineering for the Platform Engineering organization, reporting directly to the CTO/Co-Founder. This is a senior leadership role owning both technical direction and people leadership of a multi-team engineering organization.
Key responsibilities include:
**Strategic Vision & Leadership:** Own the engineering strategy and technical vision for Platform Engineering, spanning infrastructure, reliability, performance, releases, and internal tooling. Build, manage, and grow a high-performing engineering org including hiring and developing engineering managers and senior individual contributors. Partner with Product Engineering and company leadership to align platform investments with customer and business needs. Evaluate emerging technologies in distributed systems and cloud infrastructure. Contribute to company-wide strategic planning as a member of the engineering leadership team.
**Organizational & People Leadership:** Define and evolve org structure, leveling, and career paths as the team scales. Drive recruitment, onboarding, and retention of top infrastructure and security-minded talent. Set and uphold engineering rituals (on-call, incident review, capacity planning) that keep the org resilient and accountable. Coach and develop managers and senior engineers to build a durable leadership bench.
**Architectural Oversight & Technical Direction:** Provide strategic technical guidance across foundational systems, ensuring intelligent architectural decisions supporting long-term scalability, security, and reliability. Oversee design and implementation of cloud and network infrastructure, company-wide security architecture and controls, and operational tooling. Ensure scalability, security, and reliability of infrastructure addressing distributed systems complexities and adversarial threat models. Define and drive processes including security reviews, capacity planning, testing, and incident response.
**Requirements:**
- Proven experience managing engineering managers and/or leading a multi-team engineering org (not just individual teams)
- Deep understanding of distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, and security architecture, with ability to lead in-depth technical discussions and make final calls on tradeoffs
- Track record of operating and scaling infrastructure demanding high availability, performance, and strong security posture
- Excellence at holding high bar on software quality and engineering process while moving fast
- Prior experience in fast-paced crypto/web3 and/or FinTech companies, especially with security-critical infrastructure (preferred)
- Experience scaling an infrastructure org through significant growth stage (e.g., Series B → C or comparable) (preferred)
- Active tracking of crypto ecosystem developments and opinions on direction (preferred)
