GitLab is hiring a Director of Engineering in Bangalore to lead the Cells and Organizations initiative—a foundational infrastructure program that will rebuild GitLab.com as a horizontally scalable, multi-tenant platform. This role owns the engineering organization and delivery roadmap for two core primitives: Organizations (tenant boundaries that make customer data portable and addressable) and Cells (independent GitLab instances that can be provisioned on demand across clouds and regions). The target is a 100x increase in capacity for GitLab.com without customers seeing the underlying infrastructure change.
You will lead multiple engineering teams (25–60 engineers) through managers, hiring and developing leadership talent while setting technical standards and operating cadence. Key responsibilities include: delivering the Cells and Organizations roadmap (provisioning, lifecycle, routing, data migration tooling, feature parity); executing zero-downtime migrations of customer Organizations onto cells with verified rollback; architecting a multi-cloud, multi-region cell footprint and governing what stays local versus what crosses boundaries; and driving cross-functional alignment with peer engineering leaders, Product, Infrastructure, and Security across time zones in an async-first environment.
Success is measured by customer Organizations running in production on cells, availability and latency improvements from isolation and load distribution, infrastructure cost per capacity trending down, and team throughput and retention. You will operate as a peer to VPs and staff-plus engineers, holding architectural positions on technical merit and adjusting based on evidence. This is a multi-quarter infrastructure program where the hardest problems are sequencing across many teams, not individual coding. GitLab is remote-first and async-by-default; influence is exercised through written communication and public issues/merge requests.
