Kalepa is building professional-grade AI systems for the insurance industry, a $7T global sector. The company creates software that can read, reason, decide, and act within real workflows, augmenting insurance professionals (underwriters, claims handlers, pricing specialists) and automating tasks over time. Products are already in production with leading insurers, driving measurable outcomes. As Director of Engineering for Core Product, you will lead and scale Kalepa's core platform team, responsible for the cutting-edge technology that augments human underwriters and orchestrates AI underwriters. You will define the architectural roadmap, establish engineering standards and frameworks, drive operational excellence, and build a high-performance culture focused on delivering exceptional client value. Key responsibilities include: partnering with the executive team and cross-functional leaders to shape product strategy; bridging product vision and technical execution; ensuring technology investments drive business impact; establishing cross-functional cadences and engineering best practices; managing a team of engineers with potential to scale to multiple managers; and rethinking how software is built and shipped in the context of AI-augmented workflows. The role requires deep technical expertise in full-stack engineering combined with proven people leadership. You will work on problems at the intersection of AI, enterprise software, and mission-critical decision-making in insurance—where correctness, trust, and real-world impact are paramount. Kalepa is backed by leading investors (IA Ventures, Inspired Capital) and has team members from Facebook, Palantir, Google, Amazon, McKinsey, Mastercard, and Uber. The company operates with five core values: Hustle and Determination, Deliver Customer Impact, Meritocracy, Transparency, and Experiment Relentlessly. While headquartered in New York, the company supports remote employees globally and invests in regular team offsites.
