Step is seeking an experienced Director of Engineering to lead and scale the engineering organization as the company enters its next growth phase. Step is a fintech company focused on improving financial futures for the next generation through banking and borrowing products, now backed by Beast Industries (MrBeast's company).
In this role, you will lead, mentor, and grow a high-performing engineering organization while working closely with the CTO and cross-functional leaders in Product, Design, Operations, and Risk. You'll be responsible for setting technical direction, building high-performing teams, and delivering products that impact millions of customers.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading and mentoring engineering teams, creating an environment where engineers excel
- Partnering with the CTO to define and execute Step's technical strategy and engineering roadmap
- Owning engineering execution across multiple teams, ensuring high-quality product delivery with speed and predictability
- Translating customer and business needs into effective technical strategies with Product and Design
- Providing technical leadership on architecture, scalability, reliability, security, and engineering quality
- Evolving systems and development practices to support rapid growth and scale
- Establishing engineering processes and standards without unnecessary bureaucracy
- Building a culture of ownership, accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement
- Recruiting, developing, and retaining exceptional engineering talent, including engineering managers and senior technical leaders
- Identifying and removing technical and organizational bottlenecks
- Balancing near-term product delivery with long-term platform and infrastructure investments
- Ensuring reliable and secure operations as a financial services company serving millions
- Staying technically engaged to make informed decisions and contribute technical leadership
Required qualifications:
- 10+ years of software engineering experience with significant team and organizational leadership
- Proven experience managing and developing engineering managers and senior engineers
- Strong Computer Science fundamentals and software engineering expertise
- Track record building and scaling reliable, customer-facing software products
- Experience designing and evolving distributed systems and engineering organizations at scale
- Strong technical judgment and pragmatic architecture decision-making
- Excellent communication with technical and non-technical audiences
- Strong product sense connecting technical decisions to customer and business outcomes
- Hands-on, low-ego leadership style with bias toward ownership and execution
- Passion for software quality, engineering excellence, and fast-moving reliable teams
Nice-to-have experience includes fintech/banking/payments/lending, consumer-scale products, rapid growth leadership, mobile-first products, cloud infrastructure/Kubernetes, and balancing security/compliance/reliability with velocity.
Tech stack includes Kotlin, React Native, TypeScript, gRPC, Protocol Buffers, Postgres, JOOQ, BigQuery, Kubernetes, and Terraform.
