Pipe builds embedded capital for small businesses, delivering credit products directly inside the software platforms SMBs use—vertical SaaS, payments platforms, and marketplaces. The company's capital is live in Uber Eats Manager, Boulevard, Housecall Pro, GoCardless and other partners across the US, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Revenue has accelerated 2.3x year-on-year with profitability on track. As Director of Engineering, you own Pipe's entire engineering output and report directly to the CEO. This is a hands-on leadership role where you remain in the codebase, participate in architecture decisions, and engage in incident response when production issues arise. You lead approximately 10 engineers organized across two squads, each with a squad lead. You maintain technical depth sufficient to pair with engineers, debug production issues independently, and make architectural calls yourself. Key responsibilities include: owning system health, scalability and reliability across partner-facing APIs, SDKs, money movement, capital markets infrastructure, and AI/ML credit underwriting models; making and defending architectural decisions; setting standards for code quality, testing, deployment and incident response; sequencing the technical roadmap against speed, scale and risk; leading engineers through squad leads while setting the technical bar and unblocking blockers; building a culture where engineers own decisions; recruiting, mentoring and developing the team as it grows; collaborating cross-functionally with Product, Risk, Data Science, Capital Markets and Finance; representing engineering in partner technical conversations; and owning incident response and production reliability with proactive monitoring and alerting. Required qualifications: 6+ years software engineering experience including 2+ years leading a team of 5+ engineers; experience at a fintech, payments company, or regulated financial systems company; hands-on code review and production debugging; track record scaling engineering teams and systems at early-stage or high-growth startups; experience owning business-critical infrastructure where uptime, reliability and security are non-negotiable; strong cross-functional collaboration skills; first-principles operator mindset; comfort with imperfect systems and legacy tradeoffs. Preferred: payments, money movement or lending infrastructure experience; partner SDK and API integrations at scale in embedded finance, marketplaces or platform partnerships; scaling engineering teams from Series A to Series C; credit risk or capital markets systems experience.
