Eight Sleep is a sleep fitness company building advanced hardware, software, and AI technology to optimize human performance through sleep. The company's flagship product, the Pod, is used by hundreds of thousands of customers globally and has been recognized by Fast Company and TIME for innovation.
You will lead the mechanical engineering and product design team in San Francisco, overseeing development of complex electromechanical products including the Pod and an ambitious roadmap of new products. This is a people-management role reporting directly to the Chief Product Officer, with responsibility for the full mechanical engineering development cycle.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading all aspects of mechanical engineering across the full product development cycle, from concept through production
- Managing mechanical, soft goods, and prototype & test engineers
- Providing technical leadership on cross-functional trade-offs and architectural decisions spanning thermals, fluids, mechanisms, and sensing
- Traveling to Asia to ensure teams and suppliers deliver against goals
- Ensuring hardware products meet high standards of performance, user experience, and quality
- Shaping and executing the hardware product roadmap with stakeholders across the company
- Working with the Chief Product Officer and executive team to define roadmap and features
- Collaborating with electrical engineering, software engineering, sensing/clinical, operations, marketing, and finance teams
- Growing and managing a world-class engineering team through hiring, coaching, and fostering a culture of excellence
- Implementing systems and processes for peak team efficiency, including design reviews and phase gates
The company operates with intensity and high standards, with team members typically working 60+ hours per week. The role is based in the San Francisco office, 5 days per week, with required travel to Asia (particularly China) to oversee manufacturing and supplier relationships.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 10+ years of experience developing complex electromechanical systems (consumer electronics, automotive, or medical devices)
- Track record of launching products successfully under aggressive timelines with lean teams
- 2+ years directly managing mechanical and product design engineers
- Deep knowledge of injection molding, electronics/sensor integration, and mechanism design
- Proficiency with thermal engineering, fluid systems, actuators, and soft goods (highly desirable)
- Experience scaling products to high-volume production in Asia
- Expertise in DFM/DFA, tolerance analysis, and GD&T
- BSME or equivalent
- Willingness and ability to travel to China as needed
