Eight Sleep is seeking a Director of Mechanical Engineering to lead the mechanical and product design engineering team in San Francisco. This is a hands-on leadership role overseeing development of complex electromechanical products, including the flagship Pod and an ambitious roadmap of new products. The Director will report to the Chief Product Officer and manage mechanical, soft goods, and prototype & test engineers while providing technical leadership on cross-functional trade-offs spanning thermals, fluids, mechanisms, and sensing.
Key responsibilities include leading all aspects of mechanical engineering across the full development cycle, from concept through production. You will shape and execute the hardware product roadmap in collaboration with the CPO and executive team, working cross-functionally with electrical engineering, software, sensing, operations, marketing, and finance. The role requires significant travel to Asia to oversee supplier and team execution.
You will grow and manage a world-class engineering team by hiring talented engineers committed to the mission, fostering a culture of excellence and collaboration, and implementing systems and processes for peak efficiency including design reviews and phase gates.
Required qualifications include 10+ years developing complex electromechanical systems (consumer electronics, automotive, or medical devices), a track record of launching products under aggressive timelines with lean teams, and 2+ years directly managing mechanical and product design engineers. Deep knowledge of injection molding, electronics/sensor integration, and mechanism design is essential. Experience scaling products to high-volume production in Asia, expertise in DFM/DFA, tolerance analysis, and GD&T are required. BSME or equivalent is needed, along with willingness to travel to China as needed.
