Salary: USD 269,000 - 373,000 / annual
Chime is seeking a Director of Engineering to lead the AI & App Experience (AAX) organization, responsible for building the next generation of the Chime member experience. AAX owns Jade (Chime's AI-powered financial assistant), the AI platform infrastructure, core app experiences, and the shared design system.
In this role, you will own multi-quarter strategy for AAX engineering, translating company priorities into scalable plans across consumer-facing AI experiences, AI platform, app journey, and design systems. You'll build and lead a bench of tech leader managers and senior technical staff, setting the technical bar for how Chime builds AI-native, member-facing products. You'll partner closely with Product, Design, Data Science, and Risk teams to shape investment priorities and drive architectural alignment.
Key responsibilities include: developing engineering strategy and roadmaps; building, hiring, and developing a high-caliber leadership team; setting technical direction and driving AI-native engineering culture; owning engineering's strategic role in product direction; representing AAX in cross-functional and executive forums; cultivating high-performing culture with strong talent and career development practices; ensuring operational excellence in on-call, monitoring, and incident response; and contributing to broader engineering leadership initiatives.
You should have 10+ years of software engineering experience, including 5+ years managing managers or leading multi-team organizations. A track record of building and scaling AI/LLM-powered consumer products is essential, with technical depth across relevant stacks (React Native, Python, Ruby on Rails, GraphQL, distributed systems). You'll need strong experience hiring and developing engineering leaders, translating strategy into multi-quarter plans, excellent executive communication skills, and fintech experience is a strong plus. AI-native fluency and genuine interest in AI-native ways of working are critical.
