The engineering organization is currently ~30 people and scaling to ~100. This is a Director-level, manager-of-managers role reporting to the CTO alongside two peer Directors.
You will own a segment of the engineering organization, leading 3–5 engineering managers and roughly 25–40 engineers across multiple teams. Your responsibilities include:
- Designing and evolving the organizational structure within your area: defining team boundaries, charters, and staffing plans
- Leading, coaching, and holding accountable your 3–5 direct-report managers; developing first-time managers and identifying future leaders from individual contributor ranks
- Driving hiring for your teams: headcount planning, recruiting strategy, interviewer training, and closing senior candidates
- Running planning and delivery: aligning roadmaps with product, setting quarterly commitments, and ensuring predictable execution across teams
- Establishing operational rigor appropriate to a financial-systems company: on-call rotations, incident response, SLOs, and release practices that meet enterprise and audit standards
- Partnering with peer Directors, security, and compliance teams on cross-cutting concerns including shared platform infrastructure, SOC 2 compliance, enterprise security reviews, and AI governance
- Setting and upholding engineering standards across the organization: code review practices, testing discipline, observability, and architecture decisions. The tech stack includes Python/Django, PostgreSQL, Next.js, and AWS.
You will be technically credible with senior individual contributors, able to review architecture and weigh in on data-model and infrastructure decisions. You'll operate collaboratively as one of several peer leaders, with low ego and strong cross-functional effectiveness. You should have a hands-on interest in running LLMs and agents in production.
Qualifications:
- 10+ years in software engineering, including 5+ years managing engineers and 2+ years managing managers
- Led a group of 20+ engineers with multiple managers reporting to you through a period of rapid growth
- Built or operated systems where correctness and auditability are non-negotiable (fintech, accounting, payments, or ERP experience required)
- Technically credible with senior ICs; able to review architecture and weigh in on data-model and infrastructure decisions
- Comfortable operating as one of several peer leaders: collaborative, low-ego, effective at working across org boundaries
- Hands-on interest in running LLMs and agents in production
- Clear, direct communicator who writes well and gives hard feedback kindly
Bonus qualifications:
- Experience taking a product through enterprise security and compliance (SOC 2, SSO/SAML, vendor reviews)
- Familiarity with revenue recognition, GAAP close, or accounting integrations (Stripe, Deel, Rippling, banks, payroll)
- Experience with MCP or building integrations for AI platforms
- Depth in Python and relational databases
