Convene Hospitality Group is seeking a Director of Cloud Infrastructure to lead a comprehensive rebuild of the company's cloud and deployment infrastructure. This is a hands-on, high-autonomy role with no direct reports today, but significant influence over technology direction and platform decisions across product and corporate engineering teams.
The role spans multiple critical areas: rebuilding the CI/CD pipeline to move from manual, sprint-based deployments to automated, safe, and governed releases; designing and operating the AI gateway layer that manages provider routing, key management, rate limiting, token metering, and usage logging; enabling AI-first, spec-driven development through ephemeral environments and fast feedback loops; managing cloud and AI cost forecasting and optimization; supporting in-venue networking applications across nearly 40 venues; building observability and monitoring infrastructure on Loki/Grafana; and spreading knowledge across engineering teams through documentation, runbooks, and mentoring.
Key responsibilities include owning CI/CD end-to-end (build, release, rollback); implementing security and governance as design inputs (secrets management, least privilege, audit trails, environment isolation); making platform decisions on source control, CI tooling, orchestration, and infrastructure-as-code patterns (the company is committed to AWS but tooling above that layer is open for redesign); modeling and defending cloud spend; and ensuring knowledge distribution so the organization can operate without dependency on a single person.
The company operates a global portfolio of lifestyle hospitality brands focused on creating gathering spaces and experiences. The technology organization is modernizing its infrastructure to support AI-native development and scale across multiple venues and brands.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 9+ years of experience building and running production cloud infrastructure
- Deep AWS expertise: multi-account structure, networking, IAM, container orchestration (EKS/ECS), and production incident management
- Fluent in infrastructure-as-code (Terraform or equivalent) with rigor comparable to application code (reviewed, versioned, reproducible)
- Proven track record building or rebuilding CI/CD pipelines that teams adopt, including organizational change management from manual to automated deployments
- Security and governance mindset: secrets management, least privilege, audit trails, environment isolation, access control
- Production experience running AI systems: gateway layers, access control, provider routing, cost attribution, observability, LLM-backed features, evaluation, monitoring, and versioning; MLOps experience a plus
- Ability to estimate and defend architectural cost before implementation; experience modeling spend and adjusting designs based on cost constraints
- High agency: sets direction without waiting for specs, makes platform decisions with real consequences, owns migrations, holds positions firmly and changes on evidence, maintains written decision trails
- Strong problem-solving and collaboration skills; application and data teams seek you out for architecture, debugging, and trade-off analysis
- Commitment to working in the open, deliberate handoffs, documentation, training second operators, and measuring success by reducing single-person dependencies
- Clear communication of decisions, risks, and trade-offs to engineers, non-engineers, and executives; mentoring through code review and pairing
- Practical experience using AI agents for multi-step work beyond autocomplete, with verification against real systems
