Join Twilio's Platform Engineering Observability team as a Staff/Principal DevOps Engineer to lead a large-scale observability transformation. Twilio is rebuilding its observability platform from the ground up—shifting from fragmented tooling to a unified, OpenTelemetry-first stack designed for scale and cost efficiency.
You will lead the end-to-end architecture and delivery of core observability platform components, focusing on reliability, scalability, and developer usability. Your responsibilities include designing and building high-scale telemetry systems that handle logs, metrics, traces, and continuous profiling. You'll drive consistency across all observability signals, mentor engineers across the platform organization, and serve as a technical advisor on architectural decisions.
Key focus areas include solving high-cardinality telemetry challenges, distributed tracing correlation, compute cost insights, and ensuring the platform scales horizontally. You'll collaborate closely with product teams, SREs, and developer experience groups to understand telemetry needs and integrate observability into core engineering workflows. You'll also design developer-friendly tooling and APIs to support incident response, performance analysis, and platform debugging at scale.
The role leverages open-source standards like OpenTelemetry and involves building on modern infrastructure including S3-based data lakes, ClickHouse-backed query engines, Kafka, Prometheus, and similar high-scale systems. You'll champion a pragmatic approach to observability, balancing performance, cost, and user value across diverse engineering teams.
Twilio is a remote-first company with a strong culture of connection and global inclusion. While fully remote, you may be asked to report in person on an ad-hoc basis for team gatherings, functional off-sites, or customer meetings.
