Town is an applied AI company building a persistent AI assistant that learns from users and acts autonomously across their work tools (email, calendar, docs, Slack, CRM). The company recently raised $55M Series A from Andreessen Horowitz and other top-tier investors.
As Desktop Engineer, you will own Town's native macOS client end-to-end—a fast, always-on menu-bar app that integrates deeply with the OS and understands user context to act proactively. This is a high-ownership role where you'll architect and ship a product surface from zero at startup speed.
Key responsibilities:
- Build and own the native macOS app in Swift, SwiftUI, and AppKit, covering architecture, features, and polish
- Go deep on OS-level integration: menu-bar and background agents, global shortcuts, notifications, EventKit, and Accessibility APIs
- Optimize for performance and battery efficiency—low memory, low jank, always responsive
- Own the full release pipeline: code signing, notarization, sandboxing, entitlements, crash reporting, seamless auto-updates
- Handle sensitive user data on-device with appropriate security and privacy controls
- Collaborate with backend and AI teams to bring the AI agent to desktop natively
- Set the craft and performance bar for the desktop experience and future platforms
Ideal candidate:
- Extensive experience shipping native macOS (and/or iOS) applications in Swift
- Deep fluency in both AppKit and SwiftUI, knowing when to use each
- Experience working below the UI layer: OS APIs, background processes, IPC/XPC, notifications, accessibility
- Track record of owning a Mac app end-to-end, including signing, notarization, and updates
- Care about performance, polish, and user experience details
- Comfortable moving at startup speed and taking full ownership of a product surface
