Town is an applied AI company building a persistent digital assistant that learns from users' work patterns, voice, and priorities to act autonomously across their tools (email, calendar, docs, Slack, CRM). The company recently raised $55M Series A from Andreessen Horowitz and other top-tier investors.
As Desktop Engineer, you will own Town's native macOS client end-to-end—a fast, always-on menu-bar app that understands context and acts proactively. This is a high-craft role requiring deep expertise in native macOS development.
Key responsibilities:
- Build and architect Town's macOS app in Swift, SwiftUI, and AppKit, owning features, performance, and polish
- Integrate deeply with macOS OS-level APIs: menu-bar agents, global shortcuts, notifications, EventKit, and Accessibility APIs to enable Town to understand and act across other applications
- Optimize for performance and battery efficiency—low memory footprint, minimal CPU, zero jank
- Own the complete release pipeline: code signing, notarization, sandboxing, entitlements, crash reporting, and seamless auto-updates
- Handle sensitive on-device user data with appropriate security and privacy controls, partnering with the security team
- Collaborate with backend and AI teams to bring Town's agent capabilities to the desktop natively
- Set the craft and performance bar for the desktop experience and lay groundwork for future platforms
Ideal candidate has shipped a beloved native Mac app end-to-end, is fluent in both AppKit and SwiftUI, understands OS-level APIs and background processes (IPC/XPC, notifications, accessibility), cares deeply about performance and polish, and thrives in a fast-moving startup environment. Five days per week in-person in San Francisco's Financial District.
