Roblox is seeking a Design Engineer to join the Design Acceleration team as an individual contributor. You will evolve the systems and processes that power Roblox's design organization through scalable backend services, AI integrations, and custom tooling. The team builds orchestration layers and internal tools that empower designers and engineers to work faster and more cohesively.
You will architect and build scalable backend services and APIs that connect design tools to AI models and production environments (Roblox Studio). You'll develop agentic workflows and orchestration layers (such as Model Context Protocol servers) to enable natural language generation of UI components, layouts, and prototypes. You will build automated CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure to create "zero-config" development environments for non-technical designers, and design data architecture that connects the design system to AI data sources, ensuring design tokens and components are programmatically accessible and synced across platforms.
Additional responsibilities include creating internal tools and plugins for Figma and Cursor, building web apps focused on design linting and code generation, and serving as a technical bridge between core engineering, AI research, and product design. You will report to the Manager of Design Acceleration.
Roblox's platform enables tens of millions of people daily to explore, create, play, learn, and connect in 3D immersive digital experiences. The company is building tools and platforms that empower a global community of developers and creators, with a mission to connect a billion people with optimism and civility.
The role is hybrid, based in San Mateo with onsite presence Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, with optional presence on Monday and Friday.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 3+ years of software engineering experience with strong focus on full-stack or backend development, systems architecture, and API design
- Demonstrated experience building scalable internal services, not just frontend interfaces
- Familiarity with LLM orchestration, agentic workflows, and AI protocols (e.g., MCP)
- Experience with cloud infrastructure, feature-flag management, version control (GitHub Enterprise), and automated deployment pipelines
- Strong understanding of Figma plugin architecture and ability to programmatically parse and manipulate design data at scale
- Nice to have: Experience with Roblox development, Lua/React-Lua, or game-engine UI architecture
- Nice to have: Experience with ASTs (Abstract Syntax Trees), compiler logic, or automated code generation
