Restate is a lightweight runtime that turns AI agents, workflows, and backend services into durable processes. The company is building foundational infrastructure for the next generation of AI and distributed systems, already trusted by Fortune 500 companies and cutting-edge AI startups. You will own the core Restate UI end-to-end—from design decisions through production code. The UI is a live window into a distributed system where developers troubleshoot failures, monitor execution, and understand system state in real time. Your work directly impacts how developers experience a technically complex product. Key responsibilities: - Architect, design, and ship the core Restate UI from whiteboarding to production - Visualize system behavior: execution timelines, retries, queues, state, and failures - Handle data at scale: large result sets, live updates, filtering, search, and charts - Design edge cases: loading, empty, partial, error, and overflow states - Optimize for low latency: rendering cost, data loading, and perceived latency are design decisions - Maintain conceptual consistency across UI, SDKs, and documentation - Build scalable design systems in code with reusable components and patterns - Work directly with the founding team, including creators of Apache Flink and leaders from Meta's infrastructure The role requires significant autonomy, strong opinions backed by a portfolio, and the ability to push back on the team. You'll operate at the intersection of design and engineering, shipping features yourself without handoffs. REQUIREMENTS: Must-haves: - Production front-end skills: React, TypeScript, modern HTML/CSS. Ability to take features from concept through deployment independently. - Portfolio of shipped work demonstrating both craft and code. - Strong design sensibility and visual bar-setting across products. - Information design expertise: hierarchy, density, progressive disclosure, knowing what to omit. - Experience with data-intensive interfaces: pagination, virtualization, filtering, search, charts on real data. - Front-end performance profiling and optimization (rendering, re-renders, bundle size). - Visual storytelling for technical concepts. - Motion design ability built in code. - Design systems in code with coherent components. - Ability to read API specs, queries, and backend code. - AI literacy for multiplying impact and unblocking yourself. Nice-to-haves: - Prior work on developer tools, infrastructure, or AI products. - Data visualization expertise: timelines, traces, graphs, time series. - Accessibility and keyboard-first interface design. - Creative development experience (Three.js, GLSL shaders, game-like web work). - Backend feature development capability. - Serverless deployment experience (Cloudflare Workers, Vercel, edge runtimes). Not a fit: - Preference for leading design teams over senior IC work. - Expectation of finished designs to hand off or heavy direction. - Designer without coding skills or engineer without visual attention. - Lack of interest in technical subject matter.
