Umba acquired a deposit-taking microfinance bank in Kenya in 2023, which has achieved 19% average monthly growth and 6x revenue growth in 2024. The Deposit Mobilization Relationship Manager will lead the bank's deposit growth and partnership strategy. This is a people-management role overseeing a team focused on deposit mobilization and partner engagement. Key responsibilities include: Liabilities Management: Develop and execute strategies to attract and retain deposit customers across segments. Monitor and manage the deposit portfolio for diversification and cost-effectiveness. Collaborate with product teams to enhance or launch liability products (savings, fixed deposits, current accounts). Provide market intelligence, customer feedback, and competitor insights to inform product development. Track market trends and customer behavior to guide pricing and product strategy. Ensure regulatory alignment and support deposit mobilization objectives. Support Treasury in managing cost of funds and daily liquidity. Affiliations & Strategic Partnerships: Identify and manage corporate client and institutional partnerships. Structure and negotiate partnership agreements that generate deposit inflows. Build and maintain relationships for mutual value creation and customer acquisition. Compliance & Risk Management: Ensure products and agreements comply with regulatory guidelines. Work with Risk and Compliance teams to mitigate third-party relationship risks. Team Management: Supervise, coach, and develop the team. Set performance targets and monitor progress. Conduct reviews and provide feedback. Foster a performance-driven culture emphasizing ownership, accountability, and innovation. Training & Development: Identify skills gaps and implement training programs. Organize knowledge-sharing sessions on liabilities products, market positioning, and compliance. Collaborate with HR on career development plans. Champion onboarding and capacity building. Stakeholder Engagement: Coordinate with Marketing, Finance, and IT on product rollouts and partner integrations. Prepare reports and presentations for senior management on performance, risks, and opportunities. Required qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Finance, Business Administration, Economics, or related field (MBA or professional certification preferred). Minimum 5–7 years banking experience, preferably in liabilities management, treasury, or partnership development. Proven track record in deposit mobilization and institutional relationship management. Experience managing and developing high-performing teams. Strong analytical, negotiation, and interpersonal skills. Good understanding of banking regulations and treasury operations.
