dv01 is a data analytics platform serving 400+ financial institutions, providing transparency into structured finance products covering 75+ million loans across mortgages, personal loans, auto, BNPL, small business, and student loans. The company is building AI-powered products on top of this data and needs a Data Governance Lead to establish disciplined governance practices that enable trustworthy, scalable AI. Currently, dv01's governance practices are informal and reactive: definitions exist in people's heads, ownership is undocumented, and data quality is managed escalation-by-escalation. This role will replace that with deliberate, program-driven governance. You will establish named ownership and stewardship across data domains, build and maintain a correct data dictionary, implement a data quality framework with measurable metrics, and ensure compliance with client and third-party data licensing terms. Cataloging, lineage, classification, and access controls follow from this foundation. As an individual contributor role (with potential to build a team as the function matures), you will: - Scale governance across all datasets, clients, and new products to support AI products in production, ensuring data is owned, classified, measured, and trusted at scale - Define what data quality means for loan-level and deal-level data, set thresholds, and partner with Data Product Management, Data Engineering, and Data Analysts to instrument monitoring and drive sustained, measurable improvements - Establish named owners and stewards for every data domain, document their decisions, and keep those decisions current - Own the data dictionary and business definitions, ensuring they are correct, complete, and consistent across the warehouse, product, and client-facing outputs - Know exactly what dv01 is permitted to do with every dataset received from clients and third parties, and make those terms enforceable in the platform - Run governance as a program: track commitments, escalate blockers, and close items. You will rely on persistence, credibility, and clear direction rather than team size initially This is a builder's role requiring relentless execution. You will work cross-functionally with Data Engineering, Data Product Management, Data Analysts, Data Operations, Product, Commercial, and Legal teams. REQUIREMENTS: - 7+ years of expertise in data governance, data quality, or data management - Proven track record building governance programs from the ground up (not administering existing programs) - Meticulous, exceptionally organized, and detail-oriented; able to track down ambiguities and drive resolution - Fluent in technical conversations without being an engineer; able to review SQL, interpret data models, and guide technical architecture with engineering teams - Hands-on experience with governance and data quality tooling (BigQuery, dbt, Unity Catalog, Collibra, Alation, or equivalent real stacks—not spreadsheets) - Strategic expertise at the intersection of AI and data governance; proven track record designing frameworks (quality, lineage, metadata, compliance) that enable AI models to scale on trustworthy data - Knowledge across core governance domains: ownership, stewardship, quality, lineage, metadata, classification, access, master/reference data - Knowledge of key regulatory frameworks: GDPR, CCPA, EU AI Act, ISO 42001 NICE TO HAVES: - Experience managing data for external customer consumption - Startup or startup-like environment experience - Structured finance and lending data experience
