Monzo is a fintech company on a mission to make money work for everyone, transforming traditional banking through digital innovation. The company offers personal and business bank accounts, joint accounts, credit cards, savings, investments, and pension services, primarily in the UK with expansion into Europe. As Data Director for EU expansion, you will lead Monzo's data function across European markets as the company enters new territories and scales its product offering. This is a strategic leadership role that combines data science, analytics, and commercial acumen to drive product-market fit and sustainable growth across the EU. Key Responsibilities: Shaping Product and Commercial Strategy: You will decide where Monzo should bet as it enters new European markets, sizing opportunities and finding product-market fit. You'll apply sharp commercial judgment to navigate the ambiguity of building in new markets, from pricing and positioning to growth levers, bringing data into strategy early to shape priorities rather than react to decisions already made. Owning Data Strategy and Learning Loops: You'll set the data strategy for EU expansion and stand up the foundations each new market needs, including event logging, metrics design, experimentation frameworks, and forecasting. You'll lead the goal-setting process for EU expansion in close partnership with Finance, bringing clarity to metric selection and target setting. Changing How Decisions Get Made: You'll represent data at the executive committee level, building a shared language of metrics and analytical reasoning so data drives EU strategy rather than reporting on it. You'll drive cross-collective collaboration, spotting high-leverage connections across the business. Building and Leading a High-Performing Team: You'll build, grow, and retain a full-stack data team (data scientists, analytics engineers, machine learning engineers) where everyone shares accountability for product and business outcomes. You'll raise the performance bar, develop the next generation of data leaders, and model an inclusive, high-craft data culture as the team scales. You'll work closely with EU leadership (EU CEO, Country Managers, VP of Product) and Monzo's global leadership team (CTO, Head of Data, other Data Directors), sitting on the EU Tech Leadership team and helping shape global data strategy. You'll own the full learning loop that EU expansion runs on and co-own the product development loop alongside EU Leadership, Product, and Engineering. Requirements: - Strategic data leadership experience at Director level or above - Proven ability to operate in zero-to-one ambiguity, having built or scaled a data function in a new market, product line, or business from an early stage - Ability to move fluidly from detailed metrics and data architecture to customer strategy, commercial outcomes, and product-market fit - Experience leading company-wide or division-wide goal-setting, defining high-clarity metrics, setting targets, and partnering closely with Finance - Track record of changing how organizations make decisions, not just individual projects, with experience in cross-collective collaboration connecting different business areas - Empathetic people leadership experience growing full-stack data teams of both individual contributors and managers - Comfort representing data at executive and C-level peer conversations - Demonstrated ability to attract, develop, and retain top talent - Technical depth in measurement, experimentation, and data architecture with judgment about which methods and investments will pay off
