Salary: USD 159,000 - 272,000 / annual

ByteDance's Global Data Center Engineering team is seeking a Data Center Mechanical Engineer to support Americas regional projects. This role is part of a geographically distributed team focused on enabling business growth through new data center capacity while ensuring continuous stability of data center engineering systems. Key responsibilities include: - Participate in data center site selection, contractual evaluations, and design solutions, supporting project execution from construction through final acceptance - Review MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing) designs for new data center builds and data hall fit-outs; create layout plans and perform test fits to validate server capacity and failover calculations - Engage in testing and commissioning discussions to determine required verification tests for design elements - Support the DC Engineering Facilities Management team as a subject matter expert, identifying design limitations and risks - Conduct periodic audits and assessments to evaluate design effectiveness and practicality in operational data centers - Serve as an ambassador explaining data center infrastructure design to stakeholders and identify opportunities to enhance MEP design for future business needs - International travel up to 6 times annually (China, Americas, South Asia); valid passport and visa eligibility required Required qualifications: - Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline - Knowledge of power and cooling designs and capacity calculations - Understanding of power and cooling redundancy (2N, N+1, distributed redundant, UTI, TIA-942, ASHRAE standards) - Experience with concurrent maintainability in cooling redundancy design - Demonstrated ability to lead or influence engineering design and architecture teams through data center design phases (conceptual to 90% detailed design) - Proficiency with data center tiering standards (TIA-942 Tier 3, Uptime Tier 3) - Experience leading or influencing construction teams on data hall fit-outs, including IT coordination and power/cooling planning - Experience with testing and commissioning (L1-L5 tests) to validate system design intent - Knowledge of mechanical/electrical systems: generators, chillers, cooling towers, air handling units, UPS, electrical sub-distribution - Experience with liquid cooling for IT systems - Strong verbal and written communication skills with attention to detail Preferred qualifications: - Familiarity with data center mechanical system engineering, building standards/codes, CFD modeling, PUE calculations, systems commissioning, and availability analysis - 4+ years of data center engineering experience - Heat transfer and emergency power generation expertise Compensation: $159,000–$272,000 annually, plus discretionary bonuses, RSUs, and comprehensive benefits including medical/dental/vision, 401(k) match, parental leave, disability coverage, life insurance, 10 paid holidays, 10 sick days, and 17 days PTO.
