Fuse is building a next-generation pulsed-power facility called Z-Star to accelerate the world's transition to fusion energy. As the Cryogenic Systems Engineer, you will be the facility's resident expert in cryogenic and vacuum science, responsible for designing, commissioning, operating, and maintaining two deeply integrated cryogenic systems: a high-vacuum cryopumping system and a 4 K target/liner cryogenic cooling system. Core responsibilities include designing and commissioning the multi-stage vacuum system for the Z-Star chamber, including turbomolecular roughing pumps, cryopump arrays, gate valves, interlocks, and controls. You will define cryopump sizing, placement, and regeneration schedules to meet target base pressure and shot-repetition-rate requirements, and develop vacuum protocols for chamber venting, backfilling, and controlled pump-down procedures compatible with shot operations. You'll monitor and trend vacuum performance, diagnosing and resolving outgassing sources, virtual leaks, and pump degradation. You will also design and commission the liquid helium cryostat and cryogenic delivery system for liner/target cooling, including vacuum-jacketed transfer lines, LHe reservoir management, and temperature-control instrumentation. This includes developing procedures for target loading, cool-down, hold time at 4 K, and rapid warm-up following a shot, while characterizing and minimizing cryogenic heat loads. Additional responsibilities include managing liquid helium and liquid nitrogen supply, storage dewars, and transfer operations on-site; maintaining all cryogenic hardware including cryopumps, compressors, cold heads, transfer lines, and monitoring instrumentation; developing and implementing a preventive-maintenance program aligned with the facility shot schedule; and training facility operations staff on cryogenic safety procedures. You will specify, install, and maintain cryogenic instrumentation including temperature sensors, capacitance manometers, ionization gauges, and residual gas analyzers, integrating them into the facility control and interlock system. Finally, you will author and enforce cryogenic safety procedures including ODH assessments, pressure-vessel requirements, and LHe handling in compliance with U.S. codes, and perform pressure-vessel and cryostat inspection per ASME/CSA standards.
