xAI is seeking a Controls Engineer to join the Supercomputer Physical Infrastructure team, responsible for designing, building, and commissioning automated control systems for advanced AI training campuses. This role combines electrical engineering, automation, and industrial controls expertise to manage critical infrastructure including cooling plants, electrical distribution, liquid-cooling loops, and data halls.
Key responsibilities include: designing NFPA79/NEC/UL508A-compliant electrical control panels; creating electrical, pneumatic, and fluid schematics; architecting and debugging PLC code for critical infrastructure; developing HMI screens for complex plant systems; managing electrical cabinet builds and field wiring; selecting and sizing electrical components (VFDs, servo motors, controllers); deploying automated processes into live operations (BMS, EPMS, SCADA, PLC systems); and managing project schedules and budgets.
Required qualifications: Bachelor's degree in engineering; 1+ years of professional experience designing and commissioning automation and controls systems for industrial applications.
Preferred experience includes: building automation for critical infrastructure; HVAC controls and Delta controls; process integration and electromechanical systems; EPlan CAD; C#, .NET, Python, SQL; PLC programming (Siemens TIA Portal, Beckhoff TwinCAT 3); HMI/SCADA (Ignition); field bus and Ethernet communication; electrical control panel and electro-mechanical systems commissioning; NEC/NFPA 79/UL508A knowledge; industrial sensors and equipment (temperature, flow, pressure, VFDs, chillers, CDUs, switchgear); data center or high-reliability industrial environment experience; fast-paced iterative design environments; and complex problem-solving with minimal supervision.
The role requires willingness to work extended hours and weekends as needed, travel to other locations, and work onsite in the Memphis/Southaven area. xAI operates with a flat organizational structure emphasizing hands-on contribution, engineering excellence, and strong communication skills.
