Salary: USD 129,000 - 171,000 / annual
Anduril Industries, a defense technology company, is seeking a Controls Engineer to join the Manufacturing Automation team in Costa Mesa, California. This role focuses on designing, developing, and managing controls systems for advanced manufacturing environments at scale.
You will be responsible for the full lifecycle of automation systems—from initial factory ideation and machine commissioning through proof of rate capability and handoff to sustainment teams. Key responsibilities include architecting and writing PLC code for high-volume manufacturing applications, with emphasis on organized, documented, and reusable code. You will generate and enforce internal standards for control system architectures, regulatory compliance, and safety approvals.
The role involves integrating internal and external FactoryOS software into automation equipment and production lines, installing and configuring servo drives and variable frequency drives (VFDs), and leading root cause analysis for automation failures to ensure rapid resolution and long-term reliability. You will partner with cross-functional teams to troubleshoot equipment issues, reduce downtime, and drive continuous improvement.
Required qualifications include a Bachelor's degree in Robotics, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, or Electrical Engineering, plus 5+ years of hands-on experience in controls and automation within production environments. Strong proficiency in PLC programming on Rockwell or Siemens platforms and knowledge of ethernet-based communication protocols are essential. U.S. Person status is required due to access to export-controlled information.
Preferred qualifications include 8+ years of production automation experience, expertise in control panel layout and electrical component selection, proficiency in Ignition SCADA development, experience with MES and QMS integration, advanced servo drive and VFD configuration skills, and familiarity with CAD packages (Solidworks, NX, CATIA, AutoCAD).
