xAI is seeking a Controls Engineer to support the operation, design, and optimization of advanced data center infrastructure powering groundbreaking AI research. This role is part of the datacenter control systems team and offers the opportunity to work on mission-critical systems at a high-growth AI company.
Key responsibilities include:
- Implementing and modifying Building Management Systems (BMS), Electrical Power Management Systems (EPMS), and SCADA systems for current and future data centers
- Overseeing operation of critical infrastructure including chillers, pumps, and power distribution using PLCs and industrial control technologies
- Designing Human-Machine Interface (HMI) specifications and graphics standards
- Implementing and maintaining automated controls for fire safety and emergency shutdown procedures
- Developing corporate-level reporting dashboards to monitor operational metrics such as power usage effectiveness (PUE) and dynamically optimize infrastructure set points
- Coordinating with utility providers to automate demand response and operational reactions to grid events
The ideal candidate brings 5+ years of hands-on controls engineering experience with industrial control systems, a Bachelor's degree in Controls, Computer Science, Mechatronic Engineering, or related discipline, and proven expertise in Ignition SCADA programming and Siemens TIA Portal PLC programming. This is a hands-on role in a flat organizational structure where all employees contribute directly to the company's mission. Strong communication skills, work ethic, and prioritization abilities are essential.
