Formic is reshaping American manufacturing by making industrial automation accessible through a Robotics-as-a-Service model. The company combines industrial robotics, proprietary software, and full-service support to help manufacturers deploy automation quickly without large upfront capital investment, addressing labor constraints and competitive pressures. The Project Engineering team is a multidisciplinary group within the Automation Engineering organization, bringing together mechanical, electrical, and controls engineering expertise. The team serves as the engineering escalation path for Formic's deployed fleet, tackling complex problems that exceed field-level troubleshooting and converting them into standardized, engineered solutions. As a Controls & Automation Engineer, you will own advanced support requirements and the reliability of deployed robotic systems. You will operate at the intersection of troubleshooting, system optimization, and product enhancement, ensuring automation systems perform consistently in demanding production environments. Key responsibilities include diagnosing and resolving complex automation failures to minimize downtime; designing and implementing preventative and predictive reliability strategies; leading system-level continuous improvement initiatives including hardware and software upgrades; analyzing production data and diagnostic trends to identify performance gaps; providing remote support via service tickets and triaging to onsite teams; partnering cross-functionally with Product, Deployment, and Engineering teams to standardize configurations; maintaining system documentation and change-control records; serving as the escalation point for complex technical issues; mentoring field technicians on troubleshooting best practices; ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards; and collaborating with vendors on diagnostics and technical support. You will need 10+ years in manufacturing automation or industrial robotics; strong PLC, robot, and industrial control system programming; solid understanding of robotic systems and automated manufacturing equipment; hands-on experience diagnosing mechanical, electrical, and control failures; ability to read electrical schematics and technical drawings; experience in uptime-critical environments; strong problem-solving and structured troubleshooting skills; clear communication; ability to work independently and cross-functionally; willingness to travel up to 50%; and a valid driver's license.
