Plug is an automotive fintech startup building a marketplace for used electric vehicles. The company connects consumers, dealers, and commercial partners to trade, sell, and auction EVs through a platform built exclusively for electric vehicles. Founded in 2023 by former Tesla executives, Plug has facilitated $100M in EV sales and is backed by a $20M Series A from Lightspeed Venture Partners. You will serve as a Staff-level Controller, building and scaling the accounting function as an individual contributor reporting to the VP, Finance. The company currently runs QuickBooks Online with an outsourced accounting team; you will own the monthly close, run the first financial statement audit day-to-day, and transition work from outsourced providers to in-house or automated processes. Key responsibilities include: managing the monthly GAAP close across Plug Technologies and its dealer financing subsidiary, including intercompany and consolidation accounting; owning inventory and revenue recognition under ASC 606, including principal-vs-agent determinations; reconciling funds in transit (consumer payouts, lienholder payoffs, title and escrow balances, dealer settlements) and automating daily matching; preparing monthly borrowing base certificates, covenant calculations, and lender reporting; running accounts payable via Bill.com, corporate card programs, and expense policy; leading the first audit day-to-day and writing technical accounting memos; building the data room for Series B diligence; coordinating with outside providers on sales/use tax, 1099s, and entity filings; directing the outsourced accounting team and automating close tasks using AI and the data stack. Within 12 months, success means: closing the books in 7 business days or fewer with full reconciliations; completing the first audit with a remediation plan; running Series B diligence off a data room you built; establishing documented controls and set cadences for inventory, funds in transit, and lender reporting; and moving at least half of outsourced work in-house or to automation. The role is operationally complex. Plug buys, consigns, and auctions vehicles; holds consumer and lienholder funds during title clearance; and runs a dealer financing program through a subsidiary with monthly lender reporting. Each transaction flow touches the ledger, and you will ensure accuracy and compliance. You will work independently with no direct reports, following the close and audit calendar. Expect heavier hours around month-end, lender deadlines, and fundraising periods. The company emphasizes builders who scope their own work, move fast, and decide with data. REQUIREMENTS: - 8+ years of progressive accounting experience, including a multi-entity close you owned end-to-end at a high-growth company - Strong US GAAP knowledge, including ASC 606, inventory accounting, and multi-entity consolidation - Experience running a first audit as the day-to-day lead, or an audit from start to finish - Lender reporting experience, including borrowing bases and covenant compliance - Funds-flow or treasury experience, ideally at a company that holds or moves customer funds - Comfort with data and demonstrated use of AI in your own work with specific examples - Clear writing skills; memos and schedules that auditors and lenders can follow NICE TO HAVE: - CPA - Public accounting experience - Marketplace, automotive, fintech, or payments background - SQL, Snowflake, Metabase, or Modern Treasury - QuickBooks Online experience or general ledger migration experience
