The Mom Project, a multi-faceted staffing and talent marketplace platform, is seeking a Controller to lead the complete accounting function. This is a high-autonomy role requiring an individual who can independently manage the full accounting ecosystem from general ledger through month-end, quarter-end, and year-end closes.
You will be the sole accountant in the organization, carrying complete ownership of bookkeeping, journal entries, ledger reconciliations, and GAAP-compliant financial reporting. You will directly manage two operational non-accountant specialists (one focused on pay/bill processing, the other on cash application and collections), auditing their work to ensure alignment with general ledger expectations.
Core responsibilities include: executing full-cycle autonomous accounting with zero delegation of technical functions; performing forensic analysis of transactional flows across multiple product lines to identify and resolve billing inconsistencies; distilling general ledger data into strategic financial insights for the CFO; constructing and documenting internal controls and accounting workflows; and managing state-by-state payroll taxes, corporate tax filings, worker's compensation, and regulatory compliance unique to multi-state staffing operations.
The role demands deep expertise in QuickBooks Online (QBO) for managing complex, multi-line corporate ledgers autonomously. Salesforce experience is preferred but not required. You will work at the intersection of technical execution and strategic financial partnership, pivoting fluidly between high-level corporate planning with the executive suite and detailed transactional bookkeeping.
This position requires a forensic mindset—someone who enjoys investigating data anomalies, mapping complex workflows, and independently validating root causes of financial variances. You must be highly self-reliant, intrinsically motivated, and take pride in catching your own mistakes rather than relying on supervisory validation. Clear professional boundaries with operational staff are essential; you guide and mentor non-accountants while maintaining accountability for all technical accounting functions.
REQUIREMENTS:
- CPA license or CMA credential preferred
- Minimum 5–7+ years of progressive corporate accounting experience
- Absolute requirement: exposure to staffing or marketplace industry complexities (multi-state pay/bill mechanics, VMS systems, diverse client billing terms, complex commission structures)
- Proven history as an independent individual contributor who has personally run an entire general ledger and full-cycle close with zero underlying technical staff
- Advanced proficiency in QuickBooks Online, reporting, automated billing integrations, and advanced Excel modeling
- Forensic mindset with natural investigative personality
- Autonomous ownership and self-reliance
- Ability to set clear professional boundaries while managing non-accountant personnel
- Strategic adaptability across high-level planning and transactional execution
