Engrain builds map-based technology that transforms how real estate companies operate. The platform provides interactive, unit-level maps and powerful data integrations serving over 1,000 companies and 20,000 properties, enabling smarter decision-making, streamlined leasing, and improved renter experiences. The company maintains a 5% churn rate and achieves double-digit annual growth, backed by successful Seed and Series A funding rounds.
As Controller, you will lead Engrain's accounting operations and modernize the finance function through technology enablement. You will oversee a team of seven accounting professionals, including an Associate Controller, and report directly to the CFO. The role spans traditional accounting leadership—reporting, close, billing, AP/AR, payroll, treasury, general ledger, tax, and revenue recognition—while driving a transformation agenda centered on AI, intelligent agents, automation, and systems integration.
Key responsibilities include: leading accounting operations across all core functions; redesigning workflows to eliminate repetitive work and strengthen controls; automating reconciliations, transaction review, billing, collections, reporting, and data validation; accelerating close speed and accuracy while improving financial insights; strengthening systems and controls across NetSuite, Salesforce, and adjacent platforms; building and developing a high-performing accounting team; advising business leaders on accounting and financial matters; and managing compliance with US GAAP and relationships with external auditors.
The finance tech stack includes NetSuite, Salesforce, Paylocity, Workato, Zone Payments, and Avalara. You will be expected to leverage modern platforms and emerging AI tools to shift human attention from routine tasks toward exceptions, judgment, and higher-value activities.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting; CPA preferred
- 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including Controller or Assistant Controller experience, preferably in SaaS/software
- 3+ years managing and developing accounting or finance teams
- Demonstrated experience scaling accounting processes, systems, and controls in a growth-stage company
- Process-engineering mindset with a track record of simplifying, automating, integrating, or eliminating manual workflows
- Practical AI and automation fluency, including experience or demonstrated aptitude with generative AI, agents, workflow automation, and intelligent financial tools
- Strong judgment regarding where automation ends and human oversight, financial controls, compliance, privacy, and auditability begin
- NetSuite and Salesforce experience required; Workato or similar integration-platform experience strongly desired
- Strong US GAAP knowledge and advanced analytical capabilities
- Experience with AI-enabled finance, analytics, automation, or agent-building platforms is a plus
- Private-equity-backed company experience is a plus
- Intellectual curiosity, strong communication skills, and ability to translate complex financial and technical concepts into business implications
