Attain is building a data-sharing ecosystem that empowers consumers to leverage their data in exchange for modern financial services (savings tools, earned wages, rewards) while enabling businesses to access real-time data for research and targeted advertising.
You will own and scale Attain's accounting function as Controller, combining hands-on accounting leadership with a builder's mindset and modern technology adoption. This is not a traditional close-and-report role—you'll drive operational and technical transformation across accounting.
Key Responsibilities:
- Own the complete accounting function: monthly close, financial reporting, AP/AR/billing/collections, tax compliance, audit and controls, and the accounting technology stack
- Lead and develop the accounting team (currently 3 people), establishing clear ownership, standards, and documentation across all accounting domains
- Serve as the primary escalation point for accounting decisions and technical solutions
- Design and implement NetSuite workflows, build cross-system integrations (Salesforce to NetSuite), and automate processes using modern AI tools
- Eliminate senior finance's routine involvement in close, systems troubleshooting, and operational issues, freeing them for strategic work
- Establish a strong, documented control environment that scales with the company and supports audit and regulatory requirements
- Partner with Finance and other leaders on complex technical accounting questions and transactions
- Continuously identify bottlenecks and build or automate solutions
A typical week includes reviewing close items and reconciliations, debugging NetSuite or integration issues, designing and implementing automations to eliminate manual work, leading team meetings on close progress and process improvements, and responding to operational accounting questions across the company.
By the end of your first year, you'll have reduced close time and increased accuracy, automated 5-8 meaningful accounting workflows (eliminating hundreds of hours annually), built a knowledgeable and well-documented team, transformed the accounting technology stack into a modern integrated system, and positioned accounting as a strategic enabler of business growth.
Requirements:
- Significant accounting leadership experience, ideally as a Controller or comparable senior accounting role
- CPA strongly preferred
- Strong U.S. GAAP and technical accounting expertise
- Experience leading audits and working directly with external auditors
- Comfort with modern accounting systems (NetSuite, Ramp, or comparable ERPs)
- Demonstrated ability to improve processes and systems, not just operate them
- Comfortable working with data, APIs, code, and automation
- Willingness to use AI coding tools (Claude, ChatGPT, etc.) as part of day-to-day work
- Ability to operate independently in a fast-moving, complex environment
- Sound judgment about when to build internally, use automation, engage consultants, or involve engineering
