You will serve as Construction Specialist, acting as the primary bridge between Handoff and its customers to ensure the quality of AI-generated takeoffs, estimates, and material lists derived from construction drawings and blueprints. Your responsibilities include:
• Ensure estimate and takeoff quality by validating that scopes, quantities, materials, and SKUs align with customer expectations and can be confidently used in real projects.
• Develop QA processes and criteria to check accuracy of scope, quantities, materials, SKUs, and customer-specific preferences.
• Coordinate delivery of estimates within 48 hours for enterprise customers, covering residential and commercial projects, new construction and remodels.
• Review and assemble detailed material-level estimates including studs, cladding, finishes, connectors, fasteners, adhesives, consumables, and other necessary materials.
• Adapt estimates to customer requirements, ensuring outputs align with specific SKUs, sizes, technical specifications, preferred brands, product lines, colors, and finishes.
• Lead customer communication via phone, video, and messaging with contractors, suppliers, and other clients, explaining capabilities, limitations, timelines, and expectations.
• Manage and coordinate the work of estimators and QA professionals reviewing drawings, takeoffs, and estimates to ensure quality and speed.
• Support computer vision training by annotating construction drawings and helping define rules for how blueprints should be interpreted to train ML models.
• Collaborate directly with machine learning engineers, AI engineers, and full-stack developers to translate construction best practices into product improvements.
• Produce reference estimates for internal testing and review AI-generated estimates, identifying scope, quantity, material, or formatting issues.
• Investigate inaccurate estimates, identify root causes, and prevent recurring errors.
• Manage operational efficiency to keep estimate creation and review processes within cost, quality, and speed targets.
This role bridges construction domain expertise with software and AI product development in a high-growth startup environment.
REQUIREMENTS:
• 3+ years of experience in residential construction (remodels, new construction, residential-scale work, custom homes, design-build, single-family or multifamily).
• Practical experience reading construction drawings and performing takeoffs, ideally using tools such as PlanSwift, PrebuiltML, OST, or Bluebeam.
• Familiarity with estimating, project management, or construction software such as Buildertrend, JobTread, or Procore.
• Interest in transitioning from a traditional construction role to a position closer to product, software, and AI within a startup.
• Ownership mindset and sense of urgency; ability to take final responsibility for estimate quality and represent Handoff well to customers.
• Solid understanding of end-to-end residential construction workflows from foundation to finishes.
BONUS:
• Practical field or trade experience (foreman, installer, inspector, electrician, carpenter, plumber, technician, QA specialist, or similar roles).
• Experience working closely with software, product, or engineering teams.
• Experience in volume residential builders or construction material suppliers.
• Familiarity with AI, automation, or digital tools applied to construction.
