Observable Space is seeking an experienced Computer Vision Engineer to join a team of entrepreneurs, engineers, scientists, and astronomers from SpaceX, DARPA, SmartThings, and Bird. This role reports to the CTO and focuses on advancing space domain awareness (SDA) and space situational awareness (SSA) capabilities through cutting-edge computer vision and image processing.
Key responsibilities include staying current with the latest advancements in SDA/SSA, photometry, and novel image processing techniques through regular research review. You will collaborate with software development teams to conceptualize, develop, and implement proofs of concept based on cutting-edge research. The role involves evaluating, training, and customizing state-of-the-art deep learning models using architectures such as UNet, Vision Transformers, and ResNet.
You will own the complete image processing pipeline from camera sensor readout through data extraction and publication to the cloud data warehouse. This includes designing and generating simulated data for rapid algorithm testing, coordinating with operations and engineering teams to gather real-world validation data, and leading complex multidisciplinary research projects with rigorous scientific processes. Communication of complex research findings to both technical and non-technical stakeholders is essential.
Required qualifications include 10+ years of experience in relevant commercial or academic research, strong foundation in mathematics or computational mathematics, demonstrated professional programming ability in C++ or C, first-principles engineering and science experience, and proficiency in machine learning model training using PyTorch or TensorFlow. Classical vision techniques experience with OpenCV is required.
Preferred qualifications include a Master's or Ph.D. in Engineering, Mathematics, or related field, and knowledge or experience in astrodynamics.
