KoBold Metals is a scientific mineral exploration and mine development company using AI and advanced technology to accelerate critical mineral discovery. The company made its first major discovery—Mingomba, one of the world's largest undeveloped high-grade copper deposits in Zambia—and is now developing it into a world-class mining operation.
The Commercial Director is a senior leadership role responsible for establishing and executing the complete commercial strategy for the Mingomba project, a greenfield copper mining complex with expected capital expenditure exceeding $2 billion. This role owns the commercial pathway from pre-feasibility study through engineering, package strategy, tendering, negotiation, contract award, administration, transition to operations, and commercial closeout.
Key responsibilities include:
- Developing and implementing the project delivery model and contracting strategy (EPC, EPCM, design-and-build, owner-managed, or hybrid), assessing options against risk, cost, schedule, market capacity, local content, and value for money
- Establishing commercial governance policies, approval thresholds, procurement gates, contract governance, tender review cadence, and vendor management routines
- Building and directing a capable contracting, procurement, and supply chain team with clear accountabilities and growing local capability
- Managing major package tenders and awards to baseline schedule with no critical path slippage
- Ensuring final contract outlays remain within approved estimate bands with visible cost exposure and forecasts
- Quantifying, containing, and actively managing claims and variation exposure
- Meeting local content targets with auditable evidence of local supplier participation
- Ensuring procurement and contracting functions pass independent audits and stage gate reviews
- Maintaining clean integrity record with no sanctions, bribery, or conflict of interest findings
The successful candidate will have built and run major-project commercial functions before, with deep experience in large capital project delivery, commercial strategy, procurement, and contract management in mining or similar infrastructure-heavy industries.
