Salary: USD 195,000 - 250,000 / annual
Voyager Space is seeking a Chief Engineer for Strategic Systems to lead the end-to-end mission success of solid rocket propulsion system (SRM) programs. This autonomous technical leader will manage large multidisciplinary engineering teams, oversee complex systems engineering processes, and align technical execution with budgetary and schedule requirements. The role reports to the Director of Engineering within the Strategic Systems department.
Key responsibilities include directing the complete technical lifecycle of programs by leading cross-functional teams through rigorous design reviews and qualification milestones, ensuring systems are producible, compliant with technical data requirements, and balanced against cost and schedule constraints. You will lead engineering teams to meet all program milestones by maintaining focus on the critical path, proactively deconflicting resources, and driving schedule performance through aggressive management of task timelines and alternative execution strategies.
The role requires establishing and maintaining lean technical scope baselines by eliminating contingency budgeting, monitoring cost performance indices (CPI) to mitigate variances, and rigorously challenging budget change requests to preserve management reserves. You will serve as the primary technical spokesperson for programs, managing both internal and external stakeholder relationships by presenting programmatic material, cultivating new business, and ensuring customer requests remain within authorized scope while providing data-driven technical alternatives.
Minimum qualifications include a Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or related discipline with 15 years of engineering experience and 5+ years of technical leadership in solid rocket motors. You must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Security Clearance (U.S. Citizenship required). Preferred qualifications include at least four years leading controllable SRM projects with multi-disciplinary teams of 10+ people and current DoD Secret Security clearance.
The role involves up to 25% travel, including possible overnights at site locations or external test facilities. Base salary range: $195,000–$250,000 annually, with comprehensive benefits including flexible time off, medical/dental/vision coverage, and gym memberships.
