As a Mechanical Designer on the Implementation team, you will serve as the mechanical design authority for custom automation solutions. You'll transform customer requirements and site survey data into fully engineered cell layouts, end-of-arm tooling, custom fixturing, and fabrication-ready drawing packages. You'll collaborate closely with Automation Engineers from project kickoff through customer handoff, leading design reviews with internal teams and presenting CAD models directly to customer manufacturing teams.
Key responsibilities include:
• Create 3D models and detailed fabrication drawings for robotic automation cells, end-of-arm tooling, custom fixtures, machine guards, and structural support using SolidWorks
• Design to manufacturing constraints for sheet metal, welded fabrications, and machined components
• Manage bills of materials (BOMs) for sourcing and procurement
• Apply GD&T principles to ensure designs are manufacturable, inspectable, and repeatable
• Conduct FEA on structural and load-bearing components to validate safety margins
• Develop full 3D cell layout models accounting for robot reach envelopes, safety zones, operator access, and equipment footprint
• Define and document end-of-arm tooling specifications, interface plates, quick-change systems, and tool change architectures
• Present concept designs and CAD models to customer operations and engineering teams
• Incorporate customer feedback and site constraints into design iterations
• Produce complete as-built documentation packages including drawings, BOMs, and design notes
• Build and maintain reusable component libraries of standard fixturing elements and EOAT components
• Define and enforce internal design standards, drawing templates, and file management procedures
Required qualifications:
• 3–5 years of hands-on CAD design experience in industrial automation, robotics integration, or custom manufacturing
• Portfolio of completed automation or equipment designs from concept through fabrication and installation
• Demonstrated experience designing end-of-arm tooling, fixtures, or custom automation components for collaborative or industrial robots
• Expert proficiency in SolidWorks; familiarity with AutoCAD for 2D layouts
• Strong GD&T knowledge and experience creating production-ready drawing packages
• Design experience across sheet metal, welded structural steel, machined parts, and 3D-printed components
• Familiarity with robotic reach envelopes, collaborative safety zone requirements, and machine guard design standards
• Experience selecting and specifying off-the-shelf automation components: pneumatic actuators, quick-change tool changers, linear rails, force/torque sensors, and vision system mounts
• Working knowledge of electrical conduit routing, cable management, and pneumatic line placement
• Meticulous attention to detail, collaborative mindset, and self-directed work approach
Nice-to-have qualifications include SolidWorks certification, experience with robot simulation tools (RoboDK, DELMIA), background in machine tending or welding automation, familiarity with ANSI and CE machine safety requirements, OSHA training, and a degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent practical experience.
This is a full-time, onsite role (5 days/week) in the South East PA shop. The position offers competitive compensation and benefits.
