Gusto is seeking a Founding Operations Leader to architect and establish operations for its newly registered broker-dealer entity. This is a foundational role where you will build the operational blueprint from the ground up, designing policies, procedures, and work plans for money movement, trade clearing, and transaction reconciliation that meet FINRA/SEC compliance standards. You will serve as the primary authority on operational exceptions and complex decision-making, applying sophisticated judgment to resolve unusual circumstances with no precedent. Your responsibilities include establishing a robust control environment comparable to publicly traded companies, ensuring Internal Controls Over Compliance (ICOC) meet rigorous audit standards, and maintaining transaction data integrity that feeds into Gusto's consolidated financial statements and annual PCAOB audits. Key responsibilities include: authoring foundational operational objectives and procedures for the carrying broker-dealer; serving as final escalation authority for operational exceptions (complex stop-and-reissue checks, ACH reversals, securities settlement breaks, net-capital discrepancies); architecting and maintaining controls and audit governance; orchestrating cross-functional partnerships with Engineering, Product, Legal, Compliance, FinOps, and Accounting; and building and empowering an AI-native operations team. You will report to the Head of Gusto's broker-dealer entity and act as the bridge between customer impact, technical innovation, and regulatory rigor. The role requires meticulous attention to detail, proven ability to lead and scale operational processes, expertise in building consensus in sensitive regulatory environments, and the ability to balance product innovation with uncompromising financial integrity and compliance requirements. Gusto serves over 500,000 small businesses nationwide, handling payroll, health insurance, 401(k)s, and HR. The broker-dealer entity acts as custodian of customers' retirement assets and facilitates money movement and securities transactions by integrating with banking and clearing rails. All full-time employees receive competitive base pay, benefits, and equity (RSUs).
