Salary: USD 90,000 - 140,000 / annual
Tempus is seeking a Bioinformatics Engineer II to drive technical solutions across the full development lifecycle, from ideation through release. You will design and develop custom bioinformatics software according to specifications, mentor junior engineers, and set standards for technical excellence within the team.
Key responsibilities include architecting end-to-end process flows, estimating complexity and timelines, conducting code reviews with clear feedback, and collaborating with clients, partners, and product owners to understand workflows and requirements. You'll monitor processes, troubleshoot issues, and proactively highlight blockers to ensure timely resolution.
Required qualifications: Bachelor's degree with 5+ years experience, Master's with 2+ years, or PhD in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, or related field. You must be proficient in Python, have intermediate-to-advanced Linux skills (compilation, text manipulation), and strong relational database experience (MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQL Server). Demonstrated expertise in software engineering best practices including git version control, unit testing, and documentation is essential. Deep knowledge of next-generation sequencing technologies and standard bioinformatics data formats (FASTQ, BAM, VCF, GTF) is required.
Preferred experience includes cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP), Atlassian tools (Jira, Confluence, BitBucket), clinical genetics databases (ClinVar, HGMD), HGVS nomenclature, Docker containerization, API development, and CI/CD pipelines (Bamboo, Jenkins, AWS Code Pipeline). Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential for cross-functional collaboration.
