OpenAI's Financial Services team, part of the Verticals organization, is building AI products for financial institutions and professionals including investment bankers, research analysts, and investors. This backend engineering role focuses on building the systems that make advanced AI useful, reliable, and trustworthy in high-stakes financial work.
You will design and build backend systems powering AI-native financial workflows across ChatGPT Work and Codex. Key responsibilities include building infrastructure to ingest, index, retrieve, and serve financial data at scale; developing integrations with financial data providers and enterprise knowledge systems with proper authentication and authorization; building systems that enable models and agents to use the right tools while preserving source provenance; improving reliability, latency, observability, and quality of production systems; and working directly with financial institutions to understand needs and unblock deployments.
The ideal candidate has 5+ years of professional software engineering experience with a strong track record building and operating production backend systems. You should be proficient in Python, Go, Rust, or TypeScript with strong foundations in APIs, data systems, and distributed systems. Experience with data-intensive applications, search/retrieval systems, infrastructure platforms, or complex integrations is valuable. You need strong product instincts, comfort working across organizational boundaries, and a high bar for reliability, security, privacy, and performance in enterprise environments. Interest in AI and how model capabilities apply to professional work is important; direct AI/ML or financial services experience is helpful but not required. Startup or early-stage product-building experience is a plus.
This is a product-minded role with significant ownership and zero-to-one building opportunities. You'll shape new products from the ground up, work directly with customers to understand workflows, and collaborate across OpenAI to turn new model capabilities into trusted products.
