Labrynth is an AI-powered platform company that accelerates progress by streamlining regulatory complexity for heavily regulated industries including energy, compliance, and government. The company operates as a forward-deployed engineering organization with small, high-velocity teams embedded directly with clients.
You will lead backend platform engineering for Patent Intelligence, an active engagement delivering an AI-assisted patent intelligence platform. The role owns the application backend for a greenfield B2C foundation, including the B2C API, authorization boundary, private data model, durable asynchronous operations, and Python worker integration.
Key responsibilities include:
- Build a versioned REST/OpenAPI contract and modular TypeScript BFF with stable success/error envelopes and generated TypeScript clients
- Integrate Cognito identity with opaque application sessions, implementing admission, invitations, personal/team accounts, memberships, and capabilities
- Design PostgreSQL domain models with forced row-level security, migrations, and immutable constraints
- Deliver durable asynchronous operations: idempotent acceptance, transactional outbox, SQS dispatch, worker lease/heartbeat/fencing, and retry logic
- Implement durable progress delivery via append-only operation events, resumable SSE, and cursor polling
- Maintain usage, provider, and observability foundations with exactly-once logical usage ledgers and safe logging
- Support current-and-prior compatibility semantics across database, OpenAPI, events, and queues
- Build private Python worker workflows and typed pydantic-ai agent boundaries
Required expertise: strong Node.js and TypeScript for production APIs (Fastify, JSON Schema, OpenAPI preferred); advanced PostgreSQL security, data modeling, transactions, and row-level security; identity and authorization integration (Cognito/OIDC); distributed work execution patterns (transactional outbox, SQS, idempotency, leases, heartbeats); revisioned domain design; modern typed Python (uv, Pydantic, pydantic-ai); AI trust boundaries; TDD and comprehensive testing.
Nice-to-have: patent/legal-tech/document-workflow domain experience; pgvector retrieval and embedding pipelines; Neo4j or graph-query experience; Stripe webhook and entitlement experience; secure source-document ingestion and provenance pipelines.
This is a 60-90 day initial term Statement-of-Work contract with option to extend, reporting to the Patent Project engineering lead. Meaningful overlap with US and Australian project hours required for weekly planning and architecture reviews. Stack: Node.js 22, TypeScript, Fastify, PostgreSQL 18, Amazon Cognito, SQS, S3, Python 3.14, OpenTelemetry.
