GitLab is seeking a Backend Engineer to join the Source Code Experience team within the Create stage. This role focuses on building backend capabilities that support trustworthy collaboration between people and AI agents as they work with source code. You'll work with Ruby and GraphQL to improve critical source code experiences across GitLab.com, self-managed instances, and GitLab Dedicated. Key responsibilities include developing secure, well-tested, performant features using Ruby and GraphQL; designing and maintaining backend services, APIs, data models, and business logic; collaborating across product, design, testing, security, and other teams; and using AI agents strategically to speed up delivery without sacrificing quality. You'll help maintain high reliability through performance tuning, caching, rate limiting, testing, observability, and resiliency work. The role involves participating in Tier 2 on-call, troubleshooting incidents, and contributing to root cause analysis. You'll work in one of GitLab's oldest and most complex product areas, supporting workflows for millions of users. The Source Code group owns both backend and frontend aspects of source code product categories. You'll share knowledge through code review, technical documentation, and everyday collaboration while learning from experienced team members. Required experience includes professional backend web application development with Ruby and GraphQL; understanding of relational databases, SQL, data modeling, caching, and backend performance practices; contributing to user-facing workflows and maintaining their systems; writing backend unit and integration tests; familiarity with Git and collaborative code review; and strong written and spoken English communication skills for remote, asynchronous work. Experience with AI coding agents is a plus.
