Flutterwave is building trusted payment infrastructure that enables African consumers and businesses to participate in the global economy through borderless payments. As a Backend Engineer specializing in Node.js, you will develop, scale, and maintain high-performance backend services powering our payment systems.
Key responsibilities include implementing and maintaining product features (new and existing), creating technical documentation, researching product improvements, and participating in system design and architectural discussions. You will ensure secure coding practices, provide support for product features as needed, and maintain compliance with data privacy policies and global best practices.
Required qualifications include 5+ years of professional backend software development experience using Node.js in production environments. You must demonstrate strong proficiency in modern JavaScript (TypeScript is a plus), with solid understanding of object-oriented and functional design principles. Deep knowledge of data structures, algorithms, and performance optimization is essential.
You should have expertise in RESTful API design, authentication mechanisms (JWT, OAuth2), and security best practices. Proficiency with version control (Git workflows), relational databases (MySQL with ORMs like Sequelize), and non-relational databases (MongoDB, Redis with Mongoose) is required. Experience with automated testing frameworks (Jest, Mocha) and strong problem-solving abilities are critical. You must demonstrate clear verbal and written technical communication skills and the ability to own tasks from specification through deployment.
Nice-to-have skills include experience with event-driven architectures and message brokers (Kafka, RabbitMQ, BullMQ), strong research skills, and excellent time management.
