Verkada is a rapidly scaling physical security and AI platform protecting organizations globally with integrated solutions for video security, access control, air quality sensors, alarms, intercoms, and visitor management. The company has 30,000+ customers including 100+ Fortune 500 companies, a $5.8B valuation, and over $1 billion in annualized bookings. You'll join the Intercom product team—a "startup within a startup" that has achieved the most successful product launch in Verkada's history. This small, dynamic team is building cloud-managed intercom systems that enable customers to receive calls from anywhere with rich video and 2-way audio. The product is already deployed across 170+ countries with 2 million+ devices in the field. As a Backend Engineer, you'll own the architectural direction of the intercom platform's backend systems. You'll architect scalable, latency-sensitive systems serving intercoms deployed globally, design robust APIs for cross-functional teams, and drive the technical roadmap alongside firmware, mobile, and frontend engineers. The role involves significant ownership—you'll take product ideas from conception through shipping, resolving problems that span team boundaries. You'll work on ambitious features including AI-driven visitor screening and remote environmental sensing. This is an opportunity to shape a core component of Verkada's intelligent building ecosystem at a critical growth phase. Required: 4+ years backend software engineering experience, 2+ years at a rapidly growing startup or innovative company, demonstrated ability to drive technical direction and lead engineers, expertise architecting scalable systems and designing latency-sensitive applications, cross-functional collaboration skills, history of shipping significant products, deep relational database expertise (Postgres preferred), and demonstrated expertise in Python or GoLang. Kubernetes experience is a plus.
