Salary: USD 130,000 - 153,000 / annual
onX is a high-growth tech company building products that help people confidently explore the outdoors. The company operates across four verticals—Hunt, Offroad, Backcountry, and Fish—and maintains a distributed workforce of 400+ employees with headquarters in Bozeman and Missoula, Montana, plus established basecamps in Austin, Denver, Kalispell, Minneapolis, Portland, Salt Lake City, and Seattle.
You will join the Growth Infrastructure team as a Backend Engineer III, serving as a core backend contributor responsible for building and maintaining scalable services that support growth initiatives across all verticals. Your primary focus will be on shared platform infrastructure for content experimentation, event tracking, and app-start fidelity. You will report to the Growth Infrastructure Engineering Manager.
Key responsibilities include:
- Build and maintain scalable backend services supporting Growth Infrastructure initiatives, including content experimentation and event tracking
- Write unit, integration, and acceptance tests to ensure reliability
- Participate in architectural discussions and contribute design proposals for services
- Collaborate with other engineers, product managers, and cross-functional stakeholders (mobile, BI, marketing)
- Leverage and extend existing onX services rather than reinventing them
- Proactively identify and use AI workflows to increase velocity without degrading quality
- Participate in an on-call rotation to support backend services after hours
onX operates with clear goals, structure, and frameworks that guide prioritization and execution. You will have autonomy to define your work and make meaningful decisions within strategic boundaries, supported by feedback, tools, and growth opportunities.

REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, or equivalent experience
- 5+ years of professional software development experience, primarily in API development
- Permanent US work authorization
- Ability to travel quarterly for multiple days to a corporate office or onX strategic location
- Demonstrated alignment with onX Company Values
BONUS QUALIFICATIONS (not required):
- Experience with Go or similar backend languages
- Familiarity with Docker, Kubernetes, and infrastructure-as-code technologies (Terraform)
- Familiarity with a major cloud platform (Google Cloud Platform preferred)
- Exposure to A/B testing or experimentation platforms (e.g., Eppo)
