We're hiring a Backend Engineer III to join our ~650-person engineering team. You'll work on our in-house banking platform, collaborating across disciplines to solve complex challenges in products, infrastructure, security, payments, finance, customer operations, financial crime, and data.
As a Backend Engineer III (L40 level), you'll be a strong individual contributor with deep technical expertise. You'll design and build resilient, distributed systems that power our banking platform. Your work will directly impact millions of customers using Monzo daily.
You should have:
- Strong backend engineering experience building technology products at scale
- Product mindset: you care about customer outcomes and data-informed decisions
- Comfort working in ambiguous environments and collaborating across teams
- Interest in distributed systems and writing resilient software
- Experience with strongly-typed languages (Go, Java, C, Scala, etc.)
- Ability to think about system design, reliability, and performance
Our main tech hub is in London, but engineers work across the UK. We value in-person connection but don't mandate office attendance. We offer flexible work arrangements including part-time options. Core meeting hours keep teams connected while supporting work-life balance. If you're outside London and asked to visit the office, Monzo covers travel costs. We have twice-weekly lunches and social events, especially Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
