Hatch is a sleep wellness company serving 5+ million users with IoT devices and mobile apps designed to help people build healthier sleep habits. The company is headquartered in Menlo Park, California and backed by world-class investors. As a Backend Engineer II, you will build, ship, and operate the backend infrastructure powering Hatch's mobile apps and IoT devices. You'll work with Java and Python REST APIs, AWS IoT, Lambda, and DevOps practices that keep millions of devices running reliably in customer homes. The role reports to the Director of Backend & DevOps and sits within a small, high-ownership engineering team that uses AI-assisted development as a core practice. In your first 90 days, you'll learn the backend architecture through team walkthroughs and hands-on exploration, ship well-scoped features in the Spring Boot + Hibernate stack, and join architecture discussions. By six months, you'll independently deliver medium-sized features end-to-end, own a component within core areas (IoT device communication, auth flows, device scheduling, or mobile app backend support), troubleshoot production issues, and improve monitoring and alerting. Within your first year, you'll own a backend area, lead large projects with senior guidance, improve reliability and developer experience, and help onboard new teammates. You'll collaborate closely with Mobile, Embedded, and Product teams to build features from cloud APIs to device firmware. The environment emphasizes rapid learning, self-direction, business understanding, and delivering customer value. The company practices a customer-obsessed culture with tools for product analytics, dedicated exploration time, and continuous learning through cross-functional workshops and customer shadowing. Hatch is remote-friendly and open to candidates across the US and Canada, though availability during PST/PDT hours is required. **Requirements:** - 3–5+ years of backend engineering experience with strong JVM language skills - Experience building and maintaining RESTful JSON APIs in production - Technical proficiency in: Distributed Systems, JVM languages, Python, AWS, MySQL, and infrastructure/monitoring tools (Ansible, Jenkins, ELK, Graphite, Docker) - Strong automated testing practices and understanding of Continuous Deployment - Code that prioritizes simplicity, readability, and maintainability - Judgment and humility—knowing when to raise concerns and ask for help - Comfort learning new, unfamiliar technologies and paradigms - Collaborative spirit and clear communication skills - Bonus: Ansible-based DevOps pipelines, connected hardware experience, MQTT Desired mindset: customer focus, builder mentality in rapid-growth environments, preference for face-to-face problem resolution, willingness to help outside your area of expertise, openness to feedback, and iterative learning.
