GitLab is seeking a Backend Engineer for the Geo team to design, build, and maintain backend services powering GitLab Geo, Disaster Recovery, and Backup and Restore functionality. You'll work primarily with Ruby on Rails and PostgreSQL, focusing on improving replication, verification, failover, and data migration for large self-managed and GitLab Dedicated environments.
Key responsibilities include designing and building backend functionality for Geo and disaster recovery using Ruby on Rails; improving replication and verification workflows with emphasis on performance, correctness, and operational simplicity; leveraging PostgreSQL features including logical replication to support Geo, migrations, and future Cells architectures; measuring and reducing replication lag and verification failures through logs, metrics, and alerts; collaborating with Database Engineering, Infrastructure, GitLab Dedicated, and other teams on initiatives affecting Geo; participating in incident response and post-incident reviews to drive product and operational improvements; partnering with Support, SRE, and Customer Success on complex migrations and escalations; and owning projects end-to-end from proposal through production monitoring.
Required experience includes building and maintaining Ruby on Rails applications in production; working with PostgreSQL or similar relational databases including replication, indexing, and performance tuning; understanding distributed systems and data replication concepts (consistency, eventual consistency, failure modes); building and operating background job systems like Sidekiq with monitoring and retry strategies; and knowledge of replication and verification patterns such as ordered event delivery and checksums.
