GitLab is seeking a Backend Engineer to join the Repository Management team within the Source Code stage. You'll develop secure, well-tested, performant features using Ruby and GraphQL that help customers configure repositories with confidence. The role focuses on building guardrails for safe and trustworthy development as AI agents increasingly write and manage code alongside people. You'll work in one of GitLab's oldest and most complex product areas, serving GitLab.com, self-managed instances, and GitLab Dedicated. The Source Code team provides the interface layer through Gitaly to Git repositories that account for a large portion of GitLab traffic. Key responsibilities include developing backend services, APIs, data models, and business logic for repository management; working through complex requirements and legacy constraints while protecting system reliability; and contributing to performance and SQL tuning, caching, rate limiting, testing, observability, and resiliency. You'll collaborate across product management, design, testing, security, UX research, technical writing, and other engineering teams. The role involves participating in Tier 2 on-call, troubleshooting incidents, contributing to root cause analysis, and sharing knowledge through code review and documentation. You'll use AI agents for well-scoped work when they accelerate delivery without sacrificing quality, and critically review their output. Required experience includes professional backend web application development with Ruby and GraphQL (or ability to learn); understanding of relational databases, SQL, data modeling, caching, and backend performance; experience with policy, permissions, or rules-based features; backend unit and integration testing; familiarity with Git and code review; experience using AI coding tools; and strong written and spoken English for remote, asynchronous collaboration.
