Aiven is a global cloud data platform company with over 400 employees, providing managed open-source databases, search, streaming, and application infrastructure. This Backend Engineer role focuses on the ClickHouse team, working on systems that power the managed ClickHouse service used by thousands of customers. You will design, build, and maintain backend services in Python (FastAPI, asyncio, psycopg2) that manage the ClickHouse service lifecycle. Key responsibilities include working with CI/CD pipelines (Buildkite, GitHub Actions) to ship code reliably, investigating and resolving production issues across the stack from Python application code to Linux system behavior, and contributing to technical planning within a small focused team where your input directly shapes the roadmap. Required qualifications include solid Python development skills with understanding of async patterns, strong knowledge of how relational and analytical databases work under the hood, deep Linux knowledge (Fedora preferred) including systemd and filesystem internals, CI/CD pipeline experience, familiarity with automated testing (unit, integration, system), active use of AI coding tools, distributed systems awareness, and fluent English. Nice-to-have skills include ClickHouse operational experience, C++ or C ability to read database engine code, cloud infrastructure experience (AWS, GCP, Azure) with Terraform, PostgreSQL operational experience, and software/network security knowledge. The role offers the opportunity to work on real engineering problems including database orchestration, distributed systems, and performance at scale. The team uses modern tooling including strict type checking, automated formatting, security scanning, and AI-assisted development. The position is Helsinki-based with a hybrid work arrangement (3 days per week in office). Aiven offers equity participation, professional development budget, equipment choice, and global benefits including parental leave and employee assistance programs.
