GitLab is seeking a Backend Engineer to build the engine behind GitLab Duo Chat, a conversational AI experience embedded across the GitLab platform. You'll work primarily in Python to develop and maintain the agentic runtime, including the Flow Registry, LangGraph flows, and the Duo Workflow Service. You'll also integrate Chat capabilities with the GitLab Rails monolith and its GraphQL API. In this role, you'll own scoped parts of the system, ship features and improvements with minimal guidance, and collaborate with senior and staff engineers on larger projects. You'll develop secure, well-tested, and performant features; implement and extend agentic flows using LangGraph; integrate Chat with the Rails monolith; write maintainable code meeting high-scale standards with comprehensive tests; review code and respond to external contributions; identify and address technical debt; collaborate cross-functionally with Product, UX, and Frontend teams; and participate in on-call rotations for Tier 2/3 support. You should have professional experience with Python and production services, working proficiency with Ruby on Rails (or willingness to learn), and exposure to or strong interest in building with large language models, including prompting, function calling, and understanding failure modes of non-deterministic systems. You'll need experience designing and building APIs, a security-minded development approach, clear written communication skills for remote asynchronous work, and the ability to manage work independently. Experience with LangGraph, LangChain, GraphQL, RSpec, and working on remote globally distributed teams is valued. Familiarity with GitLab as a user or contributor is a plus.
