Ruya AI is a venture-backed defense-tech company building AI-native intelligent software for sovereign institutions operating in mission-critical environments. The company is headquartered in Massachusetts with offices across the US, Europe, and the Middle East.
As a Backend Data Engineer on the Quant team, you will own backend services connecting frontend, AI agents, databases, identity systems, and external data providers. You'll design and maintain data pipelines and infrastructure that feed the Quant team's multi-modal intelligence agent and evaluation systems, ensuring reliability, scalability, and observability in production.
Core responsibilities include:
- Design and maintain services using Python/FastAPI, TypeScript/Express
- Build secure REST APIs, SSE streams, and WebSocket-based features
- Own PostgreSQL schemas, migrations, transactions, and query performance optimization
- Support OIDC/JWT authentication and resource-scoped RBAC
- Integrate external data providers, handling authentication, pagination, rate limits, schema variance, and failure states
- Define stable, documented contracts for frontend and AI consumers
- Build unit, contract, and database-backed integration tests
- Instrument services with structured logging and diagnose production failures using tools like Sentry and Langfuse
- Collaborate with frontend and AI engineers throughout feature development
Required qualifications include strong production experience with Python/FastAPI/TypeScript/Express, PostgreSQL expertise (schema design, migrations, transactions, performance analysis), OAuth/OIDC and JWT knowledge, understanding of concurrency and distributed failure modes, experience designing stable service contracts, security-conscious approach to input validation and sensitive data, and ability to diagnose production issues using logs and error monitoring.
Preferred qualifications include advanced Python/FastAPI/Pydantic/asyncio skills, experience with Snowflake or ClickHouse, external API integrations, geospatial data handling, graph-oriented data modeling, containerized/distributed environments, GCP/AWS, and durable background job systems like Temporal.
The role is based at headquarters in Massachusetts with hybrid flexibility. Remote arrangements available across multiple US states and international locations. Visa sponsorship and relocation assistance provided for UAE and European positions.
