ApplyBoard is hiring an Azure Server Administrator to own the university's Microsoft Azure environment end-to-end: design, daily operations, security, and compliance. This is a hands-on, high-ownership role where you will be the primary steward of Azure infrastructure supporting academic and administrative systems.
You will design and operate Azure architecture, manage day-to-day infrastructure (VMs, databases, platform services), implement disaster recovery and backup strategies, and partner with Information Security on compliance and vulnerability remediation. You'll provide on-call incident response, document all runbooks and procedures to mitigate single-person risk, and cross-train a designated IT backup on critical recovery procedures. Every production change goes through change management with clear documentation.
Core responsibilities include Azure infrastructure administration, on-call incident response with documented escalation, process and configuration documentation, change management participation, and cross-training. You will design Azure architecture for university workloads, develop Infrastructure-as-Code using ARM templates, Bicep, or Terraform, implement Azure Policy for governance, design high-availability and recovery strategies, and optimize costs. Daily operations include managing Azure VMs and databases, configuring monitoring and alerting through Azure Monitor and Log Analytics, implementing and testing backup and disaster recovery, performance tuning, managing security posture via Microsoft Defender for Cloud and network security groups, and patch management.
Security and compliance work includes identity and access management through Microsoft Entra ID, Azure Key Vault administration, compliance alignment for FERPA, GLBA, PCI-DSS, and HIPAA, Azure Firewall and Web Application Firewall management, virtual network peering and VPN connectivity, and regular security audits with remediation to closure.
Success in one year means the Azure environment is monitored, patched, and backed up on a documented cadence with tested recovery; incidents are resolved within agreed targets with actionable post-incident documentation; audit and vulnerability findings are remediated or on a dated plan; and identity, secrets, and network security controls are documented with a designated backup capable of executing critical recovery procedures.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field, or equivalent experience
- 5+ years administering Windows and/or Linux servers in production
- 3+ years hands-on with Microsoft Azure (compute, storage, networking, identity, monitoring)
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Entra ID, role-based access control, and network security fundamentals
- PowerShell scripting proficiency; Azure CLI experience preferred
- Demonstrated experience owning an environment independently with clear documentation and change management discipline
PREFERRED:
- Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate (AZ-104); Azure Solutions Architect Expert (AZ-305) a plus
- AZ-500, SC-300, or comparable security credential (Security+, CISSP)
- Infrastructure-as-Code delivery in production with ARM templates, Bicep, or Terraform
- Higher education or regulated-industry experience
- Familiarity with Ellucian Colleague or comparable ERP environment
